Let It Snow

Around 10:00 a.m. today my manager turned the Muzak station to "Holiday".  This, of course, is the politically correct title of Muzak's Christmas Music station.  I have yet to hear a song representing a different holiday than Christmas, but since the station is only available from October 31st through January 1st, Muzak isn't really trying to fool anyone into thinking that we'll hear a tribute to Flag Day.
My manager turned it on this station as "a goof", being that it's actually funny that in the retail business we're expected to play Holiday music...and it's only November 11th.  But no one bothered to change the Muzak back to "Hitline" (modern top 40 music), "7890" (a potpourri of music of the last four decades...supposedly) or "La Musica" (our one Spanish Muzak network).  Maybe it was because it was sporadically snowing outside, or maybe it was because we've exhausted Hitline and 7890 in the store (we never listen to La Musica), but no one really complained about the Muzak being on the Holiday station.

As I drove home I took it slower than usual–mostly to avoid sliding into anyone and having anyone slide into me–and thought about how much I really love winter.  Granted, I love Summer and Fall too, but I really do enjoy almost everything about winter.  I love the way that winter smells, bringing back memories of snow-forts and ski trips.  I love seeing the snow collect on the trees and eventually build up into inches on the lawn, and I don't even mind when my shoes and pant legs get wet–I then get to relax in slippers and pajama pants.  I tried drinking hot cocoa once in the summer, but it didn't taste very sweet and was hardly as rich.  I love to curl up on the couch on the weekend, in a sweater and jeans, trying to keep Jenne warm–eventually giving in to the power of the electric blanket.
Most people are perfectly happy to be dripping sweat on in 90 degree heat, but I'd rather be dripping snot in 10 degree cold.

I'll admit that I didn't see winter coming this year.  Of course, it's hard to see coming when the temperature ranges from 72 to 32 in the span of a week.  I'm glad that it's here though.  I think we all listened to the Holiday station today because we all look forward to winter a little bit, even if only for the holidays within the season.  We could have changed the station at any time and I'm sure that when I get back to work the music will be back to 7890 or Hitline, but I believe that we all welcomed-in the winter season with the Muzak's Holiday music.

Okay, so we did bitch a lot about Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmas Time" and whatever the song was that Brittney Spears was singing, but otherwise it was almost peace on scorched earth inside the Midway T-Mobile today.
